FIRST RULE OF BUSINESS:
PROTECT YOUR ASS
It cant be all feelings and good vibes and pinkie promises. Contracts are a necessary side of any business transaction, but more importantly, one where you are the only person providing services for a hefty investment. Your client needs to know what to expect from you and you need a good format for outlining your business practices and policies.
I wish I could say with 100% confidence that you will always have wonderful, understanding clients and you will never experience a technical meltdown where your expensive equipment self destructs or you have someone plaster your images on a magazine cover without permission, but I’m not a good liar.
Bad things happen to the best people but I’ve got you. My contract is made through and through from my experiences, both imagined worst case scenarios that haven’t happened (and fingers crossed, never will) and those rare but realized lessons we all learn in life.
Its difficult to know what to put in, what’s important to outline and how to set boundaries that protect both yourself and your client. When I first started my business, one of the the things I struggled most with was the contract. They were crazy expensive to buy online and lawyers cost hundreds of dollars an hour to build one. I recently decided to make mine available to those out there who are just like I was. Lawyer approved and all! You can add to it, you can subtract from it. Do what you need to make it your own.
